Course Outline

Session 1: Tues, March 31st from 6:30p-8:30p.

Topic: Intro to Fabrics

Session 1 will be an introduction to fabric - how it is made and the different types of fibers and weaves of fabric. Fabric samples will be used to understand a fabric's hand, drape, and weight. Information packets provided during class for note taking. This will be a non-sewing class.

Session 2: Tues, April 7th from 6:30p-8:30p.

Topic: Seam Finishes + Pressing

Session 2 will cover different types to seam finishes and the importance of pressing. We will make samples of seam finishes. Sewing is 80% pressing and 20% actual sewing. You'll learn tips and tricks for making pressing a breeze! This will be a sewing class.

Session 3: Tues, April 14th from 6:30p-8p.

Topic: Apparel Pattern Reading

Session 3 will focus on learning to read apparel pattern envelopes, instructions, and cover the universal sewing pattern legend. Take home reference guides will be provided in class. This will be a non-sewing class.

Session 4: Tues, April 21st from 6:30p-8:30p.

Topic: Fabric Selection + Importance

Session 4 will provide insight into how fabric selection can make or break your garment (and your sewing experience!). We'll look at knits, wovens, and non-wovens as well as interfacings. We'll also cover helpful tools for certain kinds of fabric. This will be a non-sewing class.

Session 5: Tues, April 28th from 6:30p-8:30p (Final Session)

Topic: Measurement + Ease

Session 5 will introduce the concept of ease and the roll it plays in garment-making. We'll learn how to calculate ease. We will also cover body measurements and you will leave class with your personal measurements. Please wear a comfortable, fitted shirt and shorts or leggings. Having your measurements will help with pattern selection and alteration. Plus, measuring yourself can be difficult, so this will ensure you have help with accurate measurements.

At the end of this course, you will have the knowledge to choose a pattern, select an appropriate fabric, be able to understand the sewing instructions, and be able to finish a seam. You'll have a deeper understanding of how fabric is made, what it is made of, and tips and tricks for sewing with each.
